| Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Allen Jerome Smith, Jr., 26 years old, who previously resided in the 1300 block of Maltby Street, Norfolk, Virginia, was sentenced today by Circuit Court Judge A. Bonwill Shockley, on seven (7) counts of Burglary, two (2) counts of Grand Larceny, two (2) counts of Attempted Burglary, and four (4) counts of Petit Larceny. Judge Shockley ordered the defendant to serve twenty-two (22) years, forty-eight (48) months in the Virginia Department of Corrections. The Court suspended twelve (12) years, forty-eight (48) months of that sentence, leaving the defendant a ten (10) year active sentence to serve. The Commonwealth’s evidence showed that between September and December, 2007, the defendant, Allen Jerome Smith, Jr. burglarized five homes in the city of Virginia Beach. All but one of the burglaries was committed in the nighttime while the owners were present in the home asleep. Three homeowners had confrontations with the defendant upon waking and finding him in their homes. Smith has a prior misdemeanor conviction in the U.S. Navy for Sexual Assault in 2004.
