The Code of Virginia Beach requires that every dog and cat over four months old be licensed. Effective January 1, 2008 the way this office issues licenses has changed. You now have the option of purchasing a 1, 2, or 3 year license that will run concurrent with your dogs' or cats' rabies shot. No license will be issued that exceeds the date of rabies expiration. The basic pricing is as follows, in non-refundable amounts:

• A Dog or Cat unspayed or unneutered; $10/1 year license, $20/2 year license or $30/3 year license.
• For each Dog spayed or neutered; $7/1 year license, $14/2 year license or $21/3 year license.
• For each Cat spayed or neutered; $5/1 year license, $10/2 year license, $15/3 year license.

However, if you have a current rabies certificate that was issued prior to January 1, 2008 and valid through September 30, 2010, the Treasurer's office, in an attempt to ease taxpayers' transition into the new policy, will prorate your license on a quarterly basis. No prorated pricing will be done at any of the Veterinarian/Agents locations. Applications/Renewals will continue to go out on a monthly basis, prior to the expiration of your new license.

Notice: No applications have gone out based on this new policy. The citizens will be notified via the Beacon prior to applications going out. Keep a look out for this advertisement. Thank you for your consideration in this matter as we endeavor to keep you up to date.

Licenses are available at any of the four Treasurer's locations around the City or at any participating Veterinary Clinic throughout the City. Proof of rabies vaccination and proof of spayed/neutered (if applicable) from a licensed veterinarian is required.
