| The primary responsibility of the Virginia Beach Police Department Motorcycle Unit lies in the reduction of traffic related incidents and deaths within the City of Virginia Beach through aggressive RADAR enforcement. The Motorcycle Unit responds to traffic related calls-for-service and incidents including: traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, funeral escorts, parades, marathons, and dignitary protection escorts.
To qualify for the unit officers must pass a rigorous selection process that includes an 80-hour motorcycle school. Officers on the unit train monthly to remain proficient and excel at handling the Harley-Davidson 1400cc Road King motorcycle. Certified motorcycle instructors conduct all motorcycle training. Officers attend training with other agencies to prepare for dignitary escorts of VIPs who visit the area. In the past, members have assisted in escorts for dignitaries including U.S. Vice Presidents and former First Ladies. The unit schedule is designed to ensure the best coverage to allow them to enforce school zones, neighborhoods, and areas that receive various citizen traffic complaints. Officers are frequently asked to work weekends during their days off to represent the department at various local and regional events. |

Team members, two Officers are members of the DIVE Team, one Officer is a member of the Virginia Beach Safety Council, and one Officer assigned as a Defensive Tactics and Defensive Driving Instructor for the Police Academy. |
