The City of Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission (HRC) is accepting nominations for the inaugural Meyera E. Oberndorf Human Rights Award for Achievement in Government. This award honors government officials or groups (elected or appointed) who protect or promote the awareness of cultural diversity and advocacy of human rights. Nominees must reside or work in the Commonwealth of Virginia and contribute to promoting human rights within the state. “The HRC wants to honor former mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf for her tremendous support, commitment and dedicated service she provided the citizens of Virginia Beach. Throughout her career she continually emphasized the importance of appreciating our diverse cultures, faiths and ethnicities,” said William Dyson, chair of the HRC. “We know there are many public servants who are committed to promoting awareness of diversity and advocacy of human rights, and we look forward to receiving many nominations for this prestigious award.” Entries must be submitted by Friday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. Individuals can mail them to the Department of Human Resources, c/o Human Rights Commission, 2424 Courthouse Drive, Virginia Beach, Va. 23456. Nominations can also be hand-delivered to Room 106 in Building 18 at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center. A nomination form must be attached to all entries.
