Councilmember Jim Wood was first elected to City Council in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006. A 1981 graduate of Princess Anne High School, he earned a bachelor of science degree "with special attainments in commerce" from Washington and Lee University in 1985. He served his community as a Virginia Beach police officer from 1985 to 1988 and currently is vice president of J D & W, Inc., a commercial general contracting firm which specializes in renovations, new construction and design/build work.His commitment to the community includes service on the boards of the Virginia Beach Public Schools Education Foundation, the Virginia Beach Health Services Advisory Board, the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads, the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, YMCA Camp Silver Beach, and the Little Neck Swim & Racquet Club. He has coached youth soccer and basketball, chaired a Cub Scout pack and led the Tidewater YMCA Indian Guides program. He is a past president of both the Rotary Club of Cape Henry and the Tidewater Chapter of the Washington and Lee Alumni Association.
