Halloween is supposed to be spooky and fun, but unfortunately, it is also one of the deadliest nights of the year due to drunk drivers. In 2008, 58 percent of all highway fatalities across the nation on Halloween night involved a driver or a motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher. That’s why Virginia Beach teens are participating in Project Sticker Shock, a program focused on changing adult attitudes about selling and providing alcohol to minors. In Virginia Beach, Youth and Community Action Team (YCAT) 757, the teen group of Virginia Beach’s substance abuse prevention coalition, will put their own spin on the statewide campaign. YCAT 757 members will participate in traffic safety checkpoints in conjunction with the Virginia Beach Police Department on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009. They will disseminate educational materials and stickers about drinking to drivers. “We thought this was a great opportunity to reach drivers and let them know about the dangers of providing alcohol to minors and driving under the influence,” said YCAT 757 president Patricia Blackshaw, a graduate of Princess Anne High School and a freshman at Old Dominion University.
