Acceptable Waste

Includes household, municipal and commercial solid waste meeting the Virginia State Department of Environmental Quality acceptance regulations and Virginia Beach Landfill criteria. Waste must be generated in the City of Virginia Beach. Yard waste will be accepted from Virginia Beach residents only.  However, tree removal debris larger than six inches in diameter will not be accepted.

Unacceptable Waste

Location and Hours of Operation:
The City of Virginia Beach Landfill is located at 1989 Jake Sears Road, off of Centerville Turnpike not far from the intersection of Centerville Turnpike and Indian River Road. Operating hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.  

On-Site Traffic:
All vehicles must stop at facility scale house.  Directions, speed limits, traffic control signs and traffic spotters must be obeyed. Facility users should be alert to the hazards of other vehicles and landfill conditions. Children under 12 years old must remain in the vehicle.

Fees:
Free disposal of household solid waste generated in the City of Virginia Beach from the primary Virginia Beach residence of the disposer is allowed if delivered in a privately owned non-commercial automobile, station wagon, passenger van, mini van, unmodified low sided pickup truck or trailer no larger than a pickup truck bed.

Upon request by the scale attendant, residents must provide a valid Virginia driver's license with the resident's address where the waste was generated. Military personnel who reside in the City of Virginia Beach and retain a valid out-of-state driver's license must produce documentation such as a utility bill, rent receipt or check draft printed with their name and address. The name on the documentation must match the name on their military picture I.D.

Waste generated from rental property, investment property or business locations is subject to all appropriate tipping fees.

Contractors must pay tipping fees for waste resulting from contracted work in a private residence whether or not the resident accompanies the load.

Household Hazardous Waste:
Please visit the Southeastern Public Service Authority's Web site at SPSA for a list of accepted items, locations and designated days.

Construction Debris:
Disposal of construction debris generated as a result of "do-it-yourself" home improvement projects will be disposed of free when accompanied by a valid driver's license with your Virginia Beach address or a current bill or checkbook with military I.D. card. Household generated construction and demolition debris will be limited to twelve trips per year.

Appliances:
Appliances containing Freon gases brought to the Virginia Beach Landfill by citizens from their primary residence in Virginia Beach will be processed and disposed of free of charge. Commercial hauls of appliances that contain Freon gas will not be accepted unless accompanied by certified documentation that the Freon gas was removed. Commercial rates will apply

Batteries:
Auto, truck, boat and other vehicular batteries will be accepted.

Tires:
Up to four automobile or light truck tires with or without rims can be disposed of free of charge by Virginia Beach citizens from their primary residence. The scale attendant must be informed that batteries are included in a load. These items should not be commingled with other items.

Yard Waste:
Effective January 1, 2009, the Southeastern Public Service Authority's Yard Waste Facility located at the City of Virginia Beach Landfill, will stop receiving material.  Yard waste may be brought to the City of Virginia Beach Landfill by Virginia Beach Residents only if delivered in a privately owned non-commercial automobile, station wagon, passenger van, minivan, unmodified low-sided pickup truck or trailer no longer than 8 feet in length.  Brush and branches will be accepted up to 6 inches in diameter.  Leaves should be bagged and separated from brush.  Click here to find out about mulch mowing your leaves and grass instead!

No commercial yard waste will be accepted at the City of Virginia Beach Landfill.

All other cities in the SPSA service area must bring their yard waste to a SPSA transfer station or the SPSA Regional Landfill.  Please visit the Southeastern Public Service Authority's Web site  for locations and hours of operation:  SPSA.

Recycling:
Residents may recycle these items at the Drop-off Recycling Center located just inside the gate of the Virginia Beach Landfill during normal operating hours.
