National Stop On Red Week - August 2 – 8

Next week, Virginia Beach police will pay special attention to intersections where drivers often do not come to a full stop before turning right on red. It’s all part of National Stop on Red Week, August 2 to 8.

National Stop on Red Week will be promoted nationwide to remind citizens that RED Means Stop, even at intersections where turning right on red is permissible, but only after coming to a full stop. During this week, the Virginia Beach Police Department will be observing driver’s behavior and paying special attention to intersections where drivers disregard coming to a full stop before turning right on red.
On Wednesday, August 5, 2009, officers will be at the following locations and times:
• 10 a.m. – Noon Great Neck Road and Virginia Beach Boulevard
• 1:30 – 3 p.m.  Lynnhaven Parkway and Holland Road
• 3:30 – 5 p.m.  Witchduck Road and Virginia Beach Boulevard
• 5:30 – 7 p.m.  Kempsville Road and Princess Anne Road
According to a news release issued by the National Campaign to Stop Red Light Running, traffic crashes are the single most significant cause of preventable death and injury in North America. In 2007, in the U.S. alone, almost 900 people were killed, and an estimated 153,000 were injured in crashes that involved red light running.
