History

The Virginia Beach Farmers Market opened on April 5, 1976 at the corner of Princess Anne and Dam Neck Road. This section of Dam Neck Road was then called Landstown Rd.

The Farmers Market is historically linked to the former Norfolk City Market House. History of the Market House in Norfolk, Virginia began in a tiny wooden building (30' x 15'), built some time during the 17th century. Burned by the British in 1776, the tiny wooden house was rebuilt in 1782. This one was also burned by the British. Another market house, this time made of brick and a little larger, was built around 1900.

In 1923, a fourth, bigger market house was constructed at the same location as the previous three, on the corner of Market Street and Monticello Avenue. In 1956, the Norfolk City Market House was torn down and the market was moved, first to St. Vincent's Hospital on Church Street and then to the Tars Ball Park at Church and 20th streets.

The Market's next home was Diamond Springs Road in Virginia Beach. From there, it moved to its present location in 1976. Virginia Beach has a lengthy agricultural history and the Farmers Market is a part of that heritage.
