Opened in July 1998, the Sportsplex was the first facility in the country to be designed and constructed primarily for professional soccer. Today, the facility is operated and maintained by the Parks Division and hosts a variety of other field sporting events in addition to soccer. The three level stadium features home team, visiting team, officials dressing rooms with lockers and showers, multiple restrooms, concessions areas, state-of-the-art field lighting, scoreboard system, miscellaneous support, administrative office spaces, parking for over 2,000 vehicles and an irrigated Bermuda turfgrass playing field.
Description
The stadium is a 3-level steel and concrete structure. The Service Level contains ticketing functions, administration area, team and officials' dressing rooms and miscellaneous support spaces. The Mezzanine Level consists of a broad spectator walkway leading to the lower seating deck, souvenier store, plus concessions and restroom areas. The Club Level leads to the upper seating deck as well as six (6) luxury suites.
Seating
The facility has 6,000 seats overall, located on two levels. The lower deck contains 3,600 seats, while the upper deck contains 2,400. The majority of the seats have armchairs with seat backs. All are conveniently located to restrooms and concessions. Unique to the Sportsplex is the availability of the berm seating, which brings the stadium capacity up to 10,000.
Harold Heischober Field
Harold Heischober Field itself has a minimal crown and is sodded with special bermuda grass turf, sized to accommodate international soccer matches (75 yards x 120 yards). This is more than adequate for the full range of typical field events, including football, field hockey and lacrosse. The field is placed on a special sand bed, with an elaborate underground piping system to assure excellent drainage. The entire playing field is irrigated.
Field Lighting
The lighting has been engineered to provide 100 footcandles of illumination throughout the playing surface. This is a very high level that will meet the most demanding needs of television for international matches.
Team Facilities
There are two officials' dressing rooms with shared showers, six men's lockers and 3 women's lockers. Athletes' locker rooms are on the ground floor. Both visitor and home locker rooms are 24' x 48', with separate training rooms and showers. The visitor's locker room has 42 lockers. The home locker room has 39 lockers and a separate training room.
Free On-Site Parking
Access to the stadium parking area is off Landstown Road. A broad, well-landscaped pedestrian walkway bisects the main parking areas, which contain a total of 2,122 spaces. Special parking areas near the stadium are reserved for handicapped, and spaces have been provided for buses and team and service uses.
Concessions
In the spirit of a true stadium experience, the Mezzanine Level provides a broad pedestrian walkway with three concession stands offering fans a wide selection of indulgences.
Accessibility
Special attention has been given to the needs of the disabled. The seating levels are easily accessible by broad ramps and elevators. Special areas for wheelchairs with companion seats are available in all seating areas. Additional seating has been added to meet ADA requirements.
