Virginia General Assembly

Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Virginia

The Attorney General is the chief executive officer of the Department of Law. He represents the interests of the State in all civil cases to which the Commonwealth or any of its agencies is a party, and in criminal appeals before the Virginia Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals of Virginia . In cases involving federal law, he represents the State's interests before federal courts.

 

Virginia State Bar

The Virginia State Bar (VSB) was created in 1938 by the General Assembly as an administrative agency of the Supreme Court of Virginia. The creation of the agency unified Virginia 's lawyers in a mandatory State Bar to provide for the regulation of lawyers practicing in the Commonwealth. Since that time, Virginia State Bar activities have grown to support a broad mission which includes efforts to regulate, improve, and educate members of the legal profession; and to promote the administration of justice and quality of legal services provided to Virginians.

This site is an excellent resource for obtaining overview of the justice system in Virginia . The Virginia judicial system is comprised of the Supreme Court, a Court of Appeals, circuit courts in thirty-one judicial circuits, general district and juvenile and domestic relations district courts in thirty-two districts, and magistrates in offices in thirty-two districts. Three advisory/administrative bodies have been created by the legislature to aid in the operation of the court system: the Judicial Inquiry and Review Commission, the Judicial Council, and the Committee on District Courts.

Commonwealth’s Attorneys’ Services Council

The Commonwealth’s Attorneys’ Services Council (Council) is the Virginia state agency responsible for providing training, education and services for Virginia’s prosecutors. The 120 elected Commonwealth’s Attorneys and their approximately 545 Assistants statewide depend upon Council sponsored training programs to meet their annual mandatory continuing legal education requirements (MCLE) as established by the Virginia State Bar.

National Criminal Justice Service Information Center

The National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) is one of the most extensive sources of information on criminal and juvenile justice in the world, providing services to an international community of policymakers and professionals. NCJRS is a collection of clearinghouses supporting all bureaus of the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs: the National Institute of Justice, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Office for Victims of Crime, and the OJP Program Offices. It also supports the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

 

National District Attorneys Association

Their home page and research affiliate, The American Prosecutors Research Institute. The NDAA is the largest professional association of prosecuting attorneys in the United States .

 

National College of District Attorneys

Now headquartered at the University of South Carolina Law School, the National College of District Attorneys was created in 1970 to provide continuing legal education and training for prosecuting attorneys through programs specifically tailored to meet their needs. Sponsored by the National District Attorneys Association, the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the American Bar Association, there was no institution in existence that was devoted exclusively to providing continuing education to the nation's prosecutors. In fact, the National College of District Attorneys is still the only institution devoted exclusively to training prosecutors. The goal of the National College of District Attorneys' training is to help prosecutors fulfill their responsibilities efficiently, effectively and ethically. Through national programs the National College introduces these attorneys to innovations and developments in the classroom rather than being confronted with them in the courtroom.

The FBI's Office of Public and Congressional Affairs presents a broad selection of information regarding the Bureau's investigations, programs, law enforcement services, accomplishments, and history.

As the largest law firm in the Nation, the Department of Justice serves as counsel for its citizens.

 

Federal Judicial Center

The federal courts' agency for research and continuing education. Congress established it by statute in 1967 as a separate organization within the federal judicial system at the request of the Judicial Conference of the United States (see 28 U.S.C. §§ 620-629). Its basic policies are determined by an eight-member Board, chaired ex officio by the Chief Justice of the United States .
