Arts and Humanities Commission

Since 1979, the Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission has developed and promoted local cultural organizations and activities as part of its mission to enrich the quality of life of the people of Virginia Beach. In partnership with the community, the Commission promotes excellence in the arts by initiating and supporting programs, activities and policies that inspire, nurture and reflect the cultural diversity of the City.

The Commission is comprised of eleven members appointed by City Council to serve two year terms and are eligible for reappointment of four consecutive terms (8 years). The Commission exists to assist the growth of worthwhile programs in the arts and humanities in the City of Virginia Beach. Toward this end, the Commission provides financial assistance to organizations in the form of project grants for activities serving the citizens of Virginia Beach.

Mission Statement
To make Virginia Beach a great city, the Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission is dedicated to integrating the arts and humanities, in their full ethnic and cultural diversity, into the fabric of everyday life.  Toward this end, the Commission serves as an advisory and funding entity, stimulating and supporting excellence and accessibility in the arts and humanities for all citizens.

FY 2010 Project Grant Application Packet
The Arts and Humanities Commission offers grant programs designed to support a variety of artistic and cultural activities of not-for-profit cultural organizations which take place within the City of Virginia Beach.

These grants are supported by taxpayer revenues in an annual appropriation from City Council. A small portion of the funds available for grants may be supported by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

FY 2010 Technical Assistance Grant Application Packet
The Commission has created a small grants program to assist organizations in supporting the use of professional expertise in helping organizations resolve particular problems, or in helping organizations gain needed management skills and results in the organization's ability to provide improved service to the citizens of Virginia Beach.

Activities may include hiring qualified, short-term consultants or sending staff or board members to conference, workshops, or seminars which will increase job effectiveness.

Technical Assistance Grant Deadlines
Available funds are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis to qualified applicants following the commencement of the Commission's fiscal year (July 1st of every year).

Organizations are responsible for submitting applications eight business days prior to the Executive Committee meeting at which the organizations would like the application reviewed.

A meeting schedule is available from the Cultural Arts office. This schedule is subject to change, and applicants should confirm with the Cultural Affairs Assistant prior to submitting the application.

FY 2009 Project Grant Final Report
The Final Report is a requirement of project grants funded by the Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission (VBAHC).  Final reports are required within thirty (30) days of the project’s completion or no later than July 15th.
