***** WASTE AND RECYCLING COLLECTION SCHEDULE CHANGES *****

Due to high winds and flooded streets caused by the nor'easter storm, waste and recycling collection services were suspended for Thursday, November 12th before all collections could be completed and collections for the Friday areas have been delayed until Monday, November 16th.

Thursday area residents will receive waste collection services next Thursday, November 19th, and may place securely-tied plastic bags of excess trash at the curb along with their waste container.

Thursday recycling collection services for areas normally serviced on November 12th will resume on November 26th.  The City's 5 public-use recycling drop-off sites are available for overflow amounts of recyclables between collection days.  Please see the list of sites on this page for locations.

BULKY ITEM COLLECTION TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED:

In order to facilitate the cleanup process of yard debris following the recent Nor'easter storm, trucks normally used for bulky item pickup will be used for curbside collection of this debris.  Therefore, we will be temporarily unable to accept bulky item collection requests.  We anticipate resuming acceptance of requests on Monday, November 30th.  We appreciate your patience during this time.

***** YARD WASTE COLLECTION GUIDELINES AFTER THE STORM *****

Given the amount of yard debris from the storm and the increased quantities from the leaf season, the amount of yard debris will be considerably above normal and may take 2 to 3 weeks to collect.  Collections will focus first on bagged yard debris, with woody debris picked up as soon as possible.

Residents may place yard debris at curbside for collection by the City as follows:  Tree limbs should be no more than 4 feet long and 6 inches in diameter and placed in piles not to exceed 4 x 4 x 4 feet.  Smaller debris should be bagged in securely-tied clear plastic bags not to exceed 25 lbs. per bag.  A work order is not required for curbside yard waste collection.

Tree removal debris is not collected at the curbside, however residents may request that it be collected through the Yard Debris Container Program, provided each piece is no larger than 6 inches in diameter and fits totally within the container.  If you wish to schedule a container, please call 385-4650 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Please note that any work done by private contractors must be disposed of by the contractor.

Residents are urged to place yard debris, as well as waste and recycle containers, outside of the drainage flow line (a few inches away from the curb) to keep the drainage flow line clear and avoid neighborhood flooding.

The Waste Management Division is responsible for providing collection, disposal, and recycling services to the residents of Virginia Beach. Keeping Virginia Beach clean is a monumental task. Waste Collection crews travel over one million miles, making more than 6 million pickups, and collecting 200,000 tons of waste each year. In addition, about 35,000 tons of recyclable material is collected from drop-off recycling centers and our curbside recycling service.
