Charles Simpson Borjes became the Virginian-Pilot's first full time cameraman in 1913. He
was one of the top newspaper photographers of his day. Sports photography was his favorite
medium. Born in the Brambleton section of Norfolk on November 25, 1891, he served in the
Norfolk Light Artillery Blues Virginia National Guard unit as a private. His family gave
him a camera for Christmas during his teen years, creating his lifelong interest in
photography. He photographed all the presidents from Wilson to Eisenhower. He won
innumerable awards, but his favorite was a citizenship award presented by the Norfolk
Chamber of Commerce when he retired in 1956: "Presented to Charles Borjes, good
photographer, better citizen." He died at age 67 in a Portsmouth hospital. |
