| Virginia Beach, Virginia began to be developed into a resort area in 1880
when Colonel Marshall Parks organized several Norfolk businessmen and sportsmen into the
Seaside Hotel and Land Development Company. They built the Virginia Beach Hotel and a
pavilion, and incorporated the Norfolk and Virginia Beach Railroad and Improvement Company
to provide rail service from Norfolk to the oceanfront. The Virginia Beach Hotel was sold,
remodeled, and reopened in 1887 as the Princess Anne Hotel, one of the country's most
luxurious resorts. The hotel burned in 1907. |
