After it was declared unsafe, a cast lighthouse was built in 1881.   Mt. Trashmore Park, Virginia Beach Printer Friendly Image Mount Trashmore Municipal Park opened to the public in 1974. The mound of garbage layered with soil and overseeding was designed as a waste disposal with minimal polluting of the city's shallow groundwater, and also provides a recreation facility.
