VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – May 13, 2014 - Join Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr., Capt. Christopher Chope, Commanding Officer, NAS Oceana and the Mayor’s Veterans Committee as they host the annual Memorial Day Ceremony, Monday, May 26 at noon at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, 1000 19th Street, across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
This annual event is held to honor and pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces "who gave their all."
The formal ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 26 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial located along 19th Street, across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
As part of the opening ceremony, the Virginia Beach Police Department’s Honor Guard Unit-Rifle Team will provide a 21-Rifle Salute, followed by the Invocation given by chaplain, LCDR Victoria A. Chappell, CHC, USN, from Naval Air Station Oceana. The National Anthem and America the Beautiful will be performed by Ashley McLeod of Virginia Beach. Following opening remarks by the Honorable William D. Sessoms, Jr., Captain Christopher W. Chope will provide the keynote address. Chope is currently the Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Oceana. He is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and graduated from The Citadel in 1989 as a Distinguished Naval Graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Politics and Military Affairs. He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in August 1990.
After the formal ceremony, a separate, brief ceremony will take place behind the Memorial in the Veterans Memorial Park to recognize veterans whose names have been inscribed on brick pavers and added to the park since last fall.
The public is invited to attend. Citizens who would like to place an American flag (provided) around the base of the memorial honoring a relative or friend, are encouraged to arrive prior to the commencement of the formal ceremony. The flags will remain in place for one week.
