The City of Virginia Beach and the Financial Planning Association of Hampton Roads invite you to attend the third annual Virginia Beach Financial Planning Day on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St.
Come early and hear keynote speaker, Francina R. Harrison, a nationally recognized career expert, media personality, speaker and author of "A Mind to Work: The Life and Career Planning Guide for People Who Want and Need to Work." She is also the host, creator and executive producer of Push Up Your Career, an Internet TV show, and The Career Engineer Radio Broadcast.
Attendees can meet one on one with certified financial planners for answers to their most pressing questions on managing today’s income and resources to secure their financial future. You can choose from a series of classroom-style educational workshops addressing key personal finance topics including financial planning basics, repairing credit, saving for higher education or home ownership, and planning for retirement. All advice will be offered on a “no strings attached” basis and planners will not give out business cards or sell financial products or services. A community resource fair will be open throughout the day and attendees may also choose to participate in the Bank On Virginia Beach graduation ceremony.
The event is free and open to the public with easy on-site parking. Walk-ins are welcome, but advanced registrants will receive priority.

Virginia Beach Financial Planning Day is part of a national Financial Planning Days initiative created by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Financial Planning Association, Foundation for Financial Planning and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The collaboration is a first-of-its kind effort involving city governments and thousands of financial planners nationwide united in an effort to provide free financial education and programming to communities throughout the United States. Members of the news media are invited to attend the event and interview the organizers.
In October 2010, Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. joined the National League of Cities Mayors’ Action Challenge for Children and Families and set specific, measurable, locally defined goals and targets for child and family well-being in the following areas: Opportunities to Learn and Grow; A Safe Neighborhood to Call Home; A Healthy Lifestyle & Environment; and A Financially Fit Family in which to Thrive. The Virginia Beach Human Services Department is the lead agency on strategies to improve the financial capability of families. Through partnership with the Hampton Roads Financial Planning Association and numerous other community resources, the department connects citizens to resources and education designed to help them become financially secure.
In 2011 and 2012, more than 100 people participated in the Virginia Beach Financial Planning Day. In January 2012, Human Services launched the 500 Families Financially Fit for the Future program and Bank On Virginia Beach. For more information about these programs visit www.vbgov.com/fe or call (757) 385-3551 and speak with Lori Irwin, financial empowerment coordinator.
