The City of Virginia Beach Inclusion and Diversity Council will be honored this fall for its ongoing efforts in diversity and inclusion in city government. The council will receive the Heart and Hustle Award from the national Association of Diversity Councils at a banquet Oct. 2 in Arlington.
The award will be given to only two organizations nationwide – Virginia Beach and the University of Akron. It recognizes diversity councils that demonstrate heart and hustle in their efforts and results, distinguishing themselves as examples within their industry.
The Inclusion and Diversity Council, formed in 2009, is a city employee group that helps ensure that employees and applicants are provided equal employment opportunities and that Virginia Beach recognizes the importance of creating a diverse workforce. In 2011, the council spearheaded the creation of a regional roundtable, which meets quarterly to discuss issues of diversity and inclusion. In 2012, the council conducted a cultural assessment survey of more than 3,000 city employees to evaluate their attitudes and actions concerning inclusion and diversity.
Last year, the Virginia Beach council was named one of the top 25 diversity councils in the nation among corporations, government agencies, the military and higher education institutions. The council also was awarded the Champion of Diversity Award last year from the American Association for Affirmative Action.
