The tour kicked off in Lynchburg, Va. with a tribute and special benefit performance for his dear late friend and co-star Carl Anderson at the Dunbar Middle School Carl Anderson Auditorium on March 15, 2013. This is the very stage upon which Carl began his legendary career as a performer. A portion of all ticket sales will benefit the DMS theatre program in Carl’s honor. Ted and his Little Big Band will be in Lynchburg rehearsing the new show, making personal appearances, and conducting workshops with DMS students during the week of March 11, culminating in the Friday performance. Several of the other tour dates were benefit performances as well, including shows at the Delaware Theatre Company in Wilmington on March 17, and the upcoming Louisa Arts Center in Louisa, Va. on March 28.
In the touring show, Ted returns to his Texas roots and his first love as a “singer in a rock and roll band.” Ted will debut new music with the group, which includes Kim Norton, a stellar guitarist who has provided Ted and Carl with an underscore of searing riffs in more than 1,000 performances of “Superstar.” The new show also features stories and musical material from his career as a rock opera pioneer, including selections from Tommy, Hair, Sgt. Pepper’s, and of course, Jesus Christ Superstar. Ted also opens the vault of images and unseen footage from his personal archives, including interviews with directors Norman Jewison and Tom O’Horgan, Tommy Smothers, and many others. The tour visits 17 cities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic in March and April, and will move to other regions of the United States in the summer and fall of 2013.
