The Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission (HRC) will hold its 19th annual Human Rights Awards Program on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St.
After a very detailed process, the HRC has selected three recipients to receive human rights awards. They are Joann Mancuso, Susan Mayo and Mariah Smith. “It’s a privilege to recognize these citizens who work very hard for others,” Commission Chairman James E. Parke said.
In addition, the commission will honor the memory of the late Daniel M. Stone, former Department of Social Services director, by awarding the Daniel M. Stone Humanitarian Award. “This is the ninth year that the commission will award this prestigious honor, and we have selected the Black Law Enforcement Pioneer Committee as this year’s recipient,” Parke said.
The commission will also present the Meyera E. Oberndorf Human Rights Award for Achievement in Government. “This is the fourth year that the commission will award this special honor, and we have selected the Honorable Harvey L. Bryant, Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney,” Parke said.
“For the second recipient of the Helen P. Shropshire Human Rights Youth Award, we have selected Jack Praver to receive this very special award,” Parke said.
Recipients were selected by commission members based on their efforts to promote cultural diversity, social awareness and human rights in our community.

The commission advocates for the human rights of city residents by providing educational programming, public forums and assistance to those whose rights may have been violated.
