Construction continues at the Princess Anne Commons Gateway Park, which continues its transformation from the former Princess Anne Park site located at the corner of Princess Anne Road and Dam Neck Road. Due to delays caused by inclement weather and drainage issues, the original reopening for the park scheduled for late 2012 has now been postponed.
For the safety of all citizens, the current park site will remain closed during construction through Spring 2013.
The renovated park project includes a new trail system, picnic shelters, restrooms, playground equipment, tree planting and expanded parking, which employs a pervious paving system to reduce environmental runoff and filter stormwater pollutants.
The entire renovation project infuses environmentally sustainable principles in its design, including the refurbishment of the Light Garden sculpture by internationally-known artist Dale Eldred, which was originally located at the former Virginia Beach Pavilion. The sculpture consists of sun-refraction glass panels affixed to white poles. These panels are arranged in a clustered fashion to resemble a grove of trees which illustrates the role of light throughout the course of a day, with blue lighting elements that produce a cloud-like feel for night illumination. The work was acquired in 1983 and was one of the first pieces of art funded by the Percent for Art program.
As a planned gateway to the Princess Anne Commons corridor that contains a mix of public and private uses, quality development and exceptional recreation and open spaces, Princess Anne Commons Gateway Park will provide a strong sense of arrival to the area. The project is being coordinated with Princess Anne Road improvements.
