In honor of national Native American Heritage Month, the Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission (HRC) and the Virginia Beach Library Department, in conjunction with SkyFest Group, will recognize and honor Native Americans on Sunday, Nov. 25. This will be a day to pay tribute to Native Americans for their many contributions to the United States.
Join the festivities from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, Auditorium, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach. Admission is free and open to the public. Experience the drums, music, dance and spoken words that will allow in-depth learning and appreciation of the rich traditions and myriad contributions of Native Americans.
Native Americans are the descendants of the aboriginal, indigenous, native people who were the original inhabitants of the United States. Native American Heritage Month highlights the relationship between the United States government and the Native American governments, as well as honors the achievements and contributions of Native Americans to the United States.
“In Virginia Beach, I encourage all citizens to learn more about the history and heritage of the native people of this great land and to stand united by participating in this observance,” said Father Jim Parke, HRC chairman.
