The Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation will accept pre-applications for the Virginia Beach Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list beginning at 8 a.m. Sept. 24 through 5 p.m. Sept. 28. The online pre-application may be accessed at www.vbgov.com/hcvwaitinglist. All waiting list pre-applications must be submitted online. No paper applications will be accepted.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federally-funded program that provides housing assistance to eligible low-income households, enabling them to find decent and safe housing by subsidizing a portion of their rent. This subsidy is paid directly to the landlord.
Persons who are disabled or require assistance completing the online pre-application may visit the following locations during the dates and hours listed:
- Sept. 25-27, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation, 2400 Potters Road, (757) 463-9516
- Sept. 24-28, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Samaritan House, 2620 Southern Blvd., (757) 631-0710
- Sept. 24-28, any Virginia Beach Public Library during normal business hours. Visit www.vbgov.com/libraries or call (757) 385-0150 for library locations and hours. Please note that a picture ID is required to use the library’s Internet service.
The pre-application will require information about household income as well as the birthdates and Social Security numbers of all household members. Please have this information available when completing the pre-application. Incomplete pre-applications may not be accepted.
All pre-applications will be ranked based on established preferences. A lottery system will be used to determine placement on the waiting list within those established preferences. An applicant's position on the waiting list will not be determined based on the date and time of application, but by random selection. Therefore, there is no advantage gained by trying to be the first to apply.
Once the lottery is completed, notifications will be sent to all applicants informing them of their status and order on the waiting list. Applicants may also check their status at www.waitlistcheck.com or by calling (877) 805-3390.
Due to limited funding and the number of vouchers currently in use, there is no guarantee of immediate assistance. Applicants may wait for several years before a housing choice voucher becomes available. When vouchers are available, applicants will then be selected from the waiting list in order of position. At that time, applicants will be notified and required to verify the preference claimed and to document income eligibility for admission to the Virginia Beach Housing Choice Voucher Program.
