The Virginia Beach Department of Communications and Information Technology (ComIT) received a 2012 Governor’s Technology Award in the IT as Efficiency Driver – Government to Government category for its Automated Computer Management System.
The system is a web-based tool that automates many of the processes and activities associated with lifecycle management and replacement of city computers. Developed in-house by ComIT, the system has dramatically reduced the amount of time and the number of staffers necessary to carry out common lifecycle support activities, significantly improving the efficiency and cost effectiveness of overall computer management for the city.
A second technology, Augmented Reality and GIS Layers for Public Safety and Field Workers, was a finalist in the Innovative Commercialization of Technology Research category. This technology, inspired by ComIT Chief Technology Officer Mick Vollmer and developed in cooperation with Map Text, combines the city’s geospatial mapping layers with augmented reality technology. The resulting mash-up can enable field workers to use a tablet mobile device to "see" hidden or buried infrastructure such as water and sewer piping, fire hydrants, optical fiber and even three-dimensional building details.
The Governor’s Technology Awards program recognizes public sector IT projects that improve government service delivery and efficiency. This year, a record number of entries were received. Winners were determined by a panel of 12 judges from state, county, city and education organizations and announced at the Commonwealth of Virginia Innovative Technology Symposium on Sept. 6 in Richmond.
