Public Utilities Citywide Surveying Project Underway

Virginia Beach Public Utilities has contracted with the Timmons Group to survey and record GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates of sanitary sewer manhole locations in select areas of the city.

Several two-person survey teams will be conducting visual inspections and interior measurements of the manholes. The majority of manholes are located in the public right-of-way. In some cases, they are located on utility easements that may run across the back or side portions of properties. In these situations, it may be necessary for the surveyors to access areas enclosed by fences. If this is the case, every effort will be made to contact the property owner before entering the enclosed area. In all instances, great care will be taken to replace manhole lids back in the original condition after observations are conducted.

This project is taking place over the next several months, and is expected to be complete by November. The information obtained from the project will help the City better assess and eliminate existing conditions that could cause sanitary sewer overflows, and to comply with state and federal regulations surrounding sanitary sewer overflows.
