Nominate Outstanding Youth, Adults or Businesses for “Virginia Beach’s Best All Around” Awards

Nomination deadline April 2, 2012; Top nominees recognized at 34th Annual “Best All Around” Ceremony May 19, 2012.

Wednesday, February 08, 2012 · 11:15 am

Do you know youth who demonstrate exceptional leadership, exhibit courage in overcoming adversity, or who promote education or change around social issues? Do you know adults who contribute to the community with outstanding and inspirational work with youth? Is there a business or organization that has created a culture of support and involvement with youth? If so, consider nominating them for one of Virginia Beach’s Best All Around Awards. Completed nominations are due by April 2, 2012.

Nominees must be in one of four categories:

  1. Youth who live in Virginia Beach and are enrolled in grades 1 – 12;
  2. Youth groups whose focus of activities is in Virginia Beach;
  3. Adults who volunteer or work with Virginia Beach youth (such as a coach, teacher, mentor, social worker, probation officer, etc.); or
  4. Businesses or organizations located in or that operate primarily in Virginia Beach.

The Virginia Beach’s Best All Around awards are based on the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets®, which are positive experiences and personal qualities that help young people grow up to be healthy, principled and caring adults. A complete list and description of the Assets® is available at www.search-institute.org.

Award recipients will be youth who, by their actions, demonstrate Developmental Assets® through exceptional leadership; courage in overcoming adversity; community involvement and advocacy for social change. Other awardees will be outstanding and inspirational adults who intentionally and consistently build Developmental Assets® in their work with children and teens, and businesses or organizations that have created an organizational culture of support for young people. In addition, one adult will receive the C. William Boyce Award and one adult will receive the Malissia Lee Award for demonstrating exemplary Assets® building and youth development practices.

Nomination forms are available at the Youth Opportunities Office, all Virginia Beach Recreation Centers, Virginia Beach Public Libraries, Virginia Beach City Public Schools and online at www.vbgov.com/yoo. The nomination form requires a single typed page which provides examples of the nominee’s work in developing the 40 Developmental Assets®. Nomination forms must be submitted by April 2, 2012.

Winners will be recognized at Virginia Beach’s Best All Around 34th Annual celebration on May 19, 2012. The Best All Around Award program is sponsored by the Virginia Beach Youth Opportunities Team and Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation.

The Youth Opportunities Team’s mission is to work collaboratively to insure the health, success and well-being of all Virginia Beach youth through awareness, education and training, partnerships and prevention. The Youth Opportunities Team strives to insure that opportunities and supports are available and accessible to all youth, while maintaining an emphasis on those who are most at-risk.
