The Virginia Beach Human Services Department is once again hosting an event to provide financial resources to families struggling in a recovering economy. Super Saturday on Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Youth Career Center at Pembroke Mall will offer free volunteer income tax assistance to households earning less than $49,000, along with free access to financial and employment resources. Low- to moderate-income families are encouraged to see if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can put up to $5,751 into the pockets of eligible taxpayers. Last year, on average, the credit boosted refunds for eligible workers by $2,100.
Partners from Bank On Virginia Beach, a program developed as part of Mayor Sessoms' Action Challenge for Children and Families to connect un-banked and under-banked households to traditional banking services, will be on hand, along with volunteers from the Hampton Roads Financial Planning Association and Opp Inc. employment counselors. Representatives from Virginia Saves, a social marketing campaign to draw attention to the importance of saving, will also be on hand to kick off Virginia Saves Week 2012 (Feb. 19 to 26) and enroll savers. By enrolling, families can obtain access to free budgeting tools and resources. “Building savings is an important part of increasing a child’s success in life,” said Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. “I encourage families to take advantage of the resources available through Virginia Saves and Bank On Virginia Beach."
Those planning to file their income taxes should bring:
- Photo proof of identification
