Michael Kalvort Named Parks and Recreation Director

City Manager James K. Spore has named Michael J. Kalvort as the new director of the Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Department.

Kalvort is currently director of parks and recreation for the City of Chesapeake, a position he has held since January 2011. He has worked in the parks and recreation field for 19 years and is chairman of the Revenue Development and Management School of the National Recreation and Park Association. Before arriving in Chesapeake, Kalvort worked for six years as deputy director of the Parks and Recreation Department in the City of Cape Coral, Fla., where he oversaw 140 full-time employees and 600 part-time employees.

Spore chose Kalvort after a three-month nationwide search. The position came open in August when the former director, Cindy Curtis, was promoted to deputy city manager.

“I was very impressed with Michael’s outstanding track record in Florida and Chesapeake,” Spore said. “I am confident he will take our Parks and Recreation Department – already the best in Virginia – to an even higher level.”

Kalvort holds a master’s degree in public administration from Nova Southeastern University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida. He will start his new job Jan. 1 at a salary of $123,000.
