Field Carrier Landing Practice to Increase at NAS Oceana Beginning on Dec. 5, 2011

Due to $19 million in pavement and lighting repairs, Navy Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress in Chesapeake will close on Dec. 5, 2011 for approximately nine months.  Because the landing field will not be able to support Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) for fixed-wing aircraft, some of the squadron aircraft will use runways at NAS Oceana.  Citizens should be aware that the number of day and night landing practice operations at Oceana will increase during that time.  Night landing practice will conclude at 10:00 p.m., but there may be occasional periods when practice may extend to midnight.

“I understand the inconvenience this may cause our citizens,” said Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr.  “However, it is important that we support the Navy as it trains its pilots to defend our country.  We are truly grateful for their service.”

These repairs are part of a massive renovation of Oceana and Fentress OLF infrastructure.  Approximately $40 million in pavement restoration work is under way at NAS Oceana.  This investment shows the Navy’s commitment to Oceana and Virginia Beach as the Navy’s future east coast Master Jet Base.
