For the third year in a row, the City of Virginia Beach has been selected as a designated regional site for the observance of Veterans Day. Notification was received from the office of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs advising that the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Veterans Day National Committee selected the Virginia Beach as one of more than 50 designated sites nationwide that serve as model community events in honor of our nation’s veterans. Virginia Beach was the only site recognized in the commonwealth.
Each year, the Veterans Day National Committee reviews submissions from across the nation that represent fitting tributes to America’s heroes. This is the third year that Virginia Beach applied on behalf of The Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organizations, which has planned and orchestrated the annual Veterans Day parade and ceremony since 1970.
Priscilla Beede, event coordinator for the annual Veterans Day parade and this year’s parade grand marshal said, “We are very pleased and honored to be recognized once again for our Veterans Day observance. We have a strong military community here in Hampton Roads that represents all branches of the Armed Services. We are very proud of our service men and women, and want to show our support for all veterans as we recognize the sacrifices they have made to guarantee our freedom.”
This year’s annual parade will be held Nov. 11 starting at 9 a.m. along Atlantic Avenue, beginning at 16th Street and ending in front of the Tidewater Veterans Memorial. The parade will include military units from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard that represent the 12 military installations across the region. Veterans from Pearl Harbor, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and Desert Shield will participate, as well as local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.
A formal ceremony that includes military, federal, state and local dignitaries will be held following the parade at 11 a.m. at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, located on 19th Street across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
