Virginia Beach is one of the best cities in America for raising a family, according to a new national ranking that looks at cost of living, schools, crime and household income.
Virginia Beach is ranked No. 3 among 52 mid-sized American cities in the list of Best Cheap Cities for Raising a Family, compiled by Cheapism.com, a website that reviews inexpensive products for the home and families.
The website cited Virginia Beach’s abundant public beaches, parks and playgrounds, as well as its high median income, low unemployment rate, low sales taxes and low crime rate. “The violent crime rate is lower here than in any other city we researched,” the website wrote.
The editors examined 52 cities with populations between 300,000 and 1 million. The rankings are based on four primary factors: cost of living, per-student spending by school districts, violent crime rate and median household income. The editors also looked at city sales tax rates, unemployment, share of residents with a commute less than 15 minutes, share of married residents with children, and a comfort index that reflects afternoon summer temperatures and humidity.
Only one other city in the South was ranked among the top 10 – Raleigh, N.C., at No. 5.
