Teens ages 13-17 will explore hip hop culture and social issues when they participate in Hip Hop 2014: And the Youth Will Lead Us. This program held 6 pm to 8 pm, Monday and Thursday, June 23 - August 14, 2014 at Williams Farm Recreation Center.
Through instruction and guided discussions, teens will explore the history and foundations of hip hop, including the five elements upon which the culture is based: emceeing, DJ-ing, B-boying, graffiti, and knowledge. Each participant will select an element to study further through an interactive workshop. The entire group will select a social issue to influence them as they write, record, and perform a hip hop song.
The program will conclude with “the Big Reveal,” Thursday, August 14, 2014, when the entire group will perform their song at Kempsville Recreation Center in front of family, friends, and special guests. This song will also be played on 103 Jamz!
Hip Hop 2014: And the Youth Will Lead Us is free, although a Virginia Beach Recreation Center membership or day pass is required. Registration begins Saturday, May 10, 2014 at each Virginia Beach Recreation Center. Registration is required by Friday, June 13, 2014.
