The Virginia Beach Department of Museums will host a public meeting to discuss planned maintenance and customer service improvements for the Adam Thoroughgood House and property in the cafeteria at Thoroughgood Elementary School, 1444 Dunstan Lane, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30. All citizens interested in learning about the status of maintenance, accessibility and site improvement projects are encouraged to attend.
The Adam Thoroughgood House is a circa 1719 National Historic Landmark that has been open to the public as a museum since 1957. The property was transferred to the City of Virginia Beach in 2003 and the Department of Museums has been implementing a program of research, preservation and conservation during the past decade.
Replacement and upgrade of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system is the primary maintenance project that is funded for implementation in 2014. Also funded and planned as a coordinated project are site improvements for accessibility for persons with disabilities. Department of Museums staff will also discuss preliminary plans for construction of a new visitor center and related improvements for the site. Waller Todd & Sadler Architects will be on hand to review drawings, materials and other details.
The Adam Thoroughgood House is located at 1636 Parish Road in the Thoroughgood neighborhood. It is open for tours Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays noon to 4 p.m. A moderate admission fee is charged.
