The earliest English settlers in the Virginia colony celebrated Christmas with the traditions they brought with them. The lighting of the Yule Log began the festivities of the Christmas season, which concluded on Twelfth Night, the 6th of January. Border Morris dancing, a form of traditional English folk dance, was popular during the period of Virginia’s colonization.
Admission to the Lighting of the Yule Log is $2.00, with members and children 5 and under admitted free. The Adam Thoroughgood House is one of the oldest surviving colonial houses in Virginia, dating to circa 1719, and is a registered National Historic Landmark. The Adam Thoroughgood House is located at 1636 Parish Road in Virginia Beach. Please call 460-7588 or 460-7530 or visit www.museumsvb.org for more information.
