This October, the Friends of Live Oaks, in partnership with the Virginia Beach Environment and Sustainability Office, will give away young live oak trees to Virginia Beach residents to plant in the city. This will be the third annual live oak distribution. As in the past, there will be no charge for the trees. Recipients are, however, encouraged to become official Friends of Live Oaks members by purchasing a $10 membership.
All application forms for a tree must be received by Wednesday, Oct. 7. Application forms can be submitted online and are available at libraries and recreation centers, or online at www.VBgov.com/liveoaks. Hard copies can be mailed to Friends of Live Oaks, 4908A Lauderdale Ave., Virginia Beach, VA 23455.
Trees must be picked up at the Linkhorn Annex (former Linkhorn Park Elementary School), 1413 Laskin Road, on Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 pm. Plastic bags will be provided for tree and car protection. Trees will come with planting instructions. Recipients will be notified soon after applications are processed.
Before you pick up your tree on Oct. 12, you need to select the location where you are going to plant your tree. Please ensure that:
· There are no overhead power lines
· There are no structures – houses, garages, sheds, sidewalks, patios or decks – within 10 feet (20 feet would be preferred)
· It is not in a city drainage or utility easement
