Dr. Heidi A. Kulberg has been chosen as the new health director for the City of Virginia Beach.
Currently deputy health director for Chesapeake, Dr. Kulberg also has been acting health director in Virginia Beach for the past two months. The former director, Dr. Venita Newby-Owens, retired April 1 after 15 years on the job.
Dr. Kulberg was a family physician with the U.S. Navy for 10 years in Pensacola, Fla.; Yokosuka, Japan; Naples, Italy, and Portsmouth Naval Medical Center. She volunteered at the Chesapeake Care Free Clinic from 2007 to 2009, worked at Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Virginia in Norfolk from 2006 to 2009, and at the Chesapeake Health Department since November 2009. She teaches public health and family and community medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk.
Dr. Kulberg earned a dual bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and Russian and Soviet studies, and a medical doctorate from the University of Arizona, as well as a master’s degree in public health from EVMS and Old Dominion University.
She will official start as health director on June 17, but will continue to finish projects in Chesapeake until July 1.
