The Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau’s starting lineup has a few new faces.
The Meetings and Conventions Sales division has hired three new team members and happily promoted an existing player. The new additions make for a dynamic team with extensive hospitality experience in both hotel and destination sales and management.
First up is Jamie Mitchell, one of two new sales managers. Mitchell will focus on religious associations, fraternal and sports associations, as well as Southeast territories. She received her bachelor’s degree in commercial tourism from Christopher Newport University and has since earned the distinguished Certified Meeting Professional certification. Mitchell started at the Hampton Convention and Visitors Bureau as an intern and advanced into sales, successfully selling Hampton and its convention center for more than nine years. Most recently, she represented the Chesapeake Convention and Visitors Bureau in sales.
Rachel Weiss has been hired as the second new sales manager. Weiss will focus on military reunions, meetings under 50 rooms on peak night and researching new business for the team. Weiss received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in tourism from North Carolina State University and comes to the bureau with experience in hotel sales and meeting and event planning.
Next up is Fred Malinis, the new sales database strategist and research manager. Malinis will assist the team with managing projects, training and developing sales strategies for the Customer Relationship Management system, overseeing intern opportunities for research and developing new technology. Malinis received his first bachelor’s degree in tourism management from Old Dominion University. In 1999, he started at the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau as an intern and soon advanced into sales. In 2009, he departed to pursue and receive a second bachelor’s degree in computer science from Old Dominion University.
Assuming the leadership role of director of sports marketing is Nancy Helman, who has been a key player on the Sports Marketing team for the past 12 years. With this advancement, she will continue to drive the sales efforts for the sports marketing unit. In the past Nancy has played an integral role in attracting sporting events by attending the TEAMS Conference and Expo, and the National Associations of Sports Commission Conference. Helman brings a great deal of industry experience, tremendous work ethic and unique passion to this critical position.
These new team players bring diverse strengths and expertise to the Meetings and Conventions Sales Team. They have worked the gamut of corporate and association sales and have excelled in being the top sales managers for their previous teams. Team CVB is ready to “Bring it to the Beach” and position Virginia Beach as the number one destination for meetings and conventions.
