Construction at Little Island Park (3820 S. Sandpiper Road) has started, which involves the addition of 124 new parking spaces to the existing 540-space parking lot. Primarily constructed of environmentally-sustainable open-grid pavers, the Little Island Park parking lot will also feature a new entrance and attendant booth.
Improvements made in 2012 to the traffic lane on Sandpiper Road enabled this next construction phase to occur. The ultimate goals for these enhancements are to alleviate seasonal traffic congestion in southern Sandbridge while improving public access to the beach, fishing pier, playground, shelters and other amenities at Little Island Park. Located next to both the Atlantic Ocean and Back Bay, north of the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, Little Island Park is a unique 144-acre beach park.
While the park is still open during regular hours of operation, the public should be advised of possible limited parking during construction. Completion is anticipated in time for public use by Memorial Day. New landscaping will also be planted in fall 2013.
