HRT to Host Public Meetings Feb. 25 and 28 in Virginia Beach on Transit Extension Study

Hampton Roads Transit will host two meetings in Virginia Beach this month to provide information and receive public comments on the latest developments in the Virginia Beach Transit Extension Study.

HRT is studying four possible alternatives: extending The Tide light rail from Norfolk, expanding local bus service, building a bus rapid transit system, or doing nothing. The meetings will be held:

• Monday, Feb. 25, Linkhorn Park Elementary School, 977 First Colonial Road, 6 to 8 p.m.
• Thursday, Feb. 28, Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, 2020 Laskin Road, 6 to 8 p.m.

At the meetings, residents can see how high-capacity transit services could be incorporated into the Hilltop area as part of the Transit Extension Study. The public is encouraged to provide input on how access to Hilltop might be achieved from the original alignment and where passenger stations may be located.

HRT is studying the best possible transit use for the former Norfolk Southern right of way that runs roughly parallel to Interstate 264 from Newtown Road to Birdneck Road.  The corridor under study extends beyond Birdneck to the Oceanfront at 19th Street. Shorter options are also under consideration, including ones from Newtown to the Rosemont Road area, or from Newtown to the Lynnhaven Parkway area.
