Mary Kay Holladay, the latest artist to be featured in the Sandler Center Art Gallery, is now proud to call herself a full-time, professional artist after enjoying art primarily as a hobby before leaving her occupation as a medical technologist. She has been included in numerous juried exhibitions, private and corporate collections, won several awards and recently earned a spot as the cover artist of the Chesapeake Bay Art Association's "Artistry in the Kitchen" cookbook.
Her art style began as representational but has recently switched to abstract and contemporary work with watercolors and acrylics. She likes bright colors and textures as well as using the landscapes, cityscapes and flowers of Virginia Beach as subject matter.
Even after periods away from art, she found herself being pulled back time and time again and eventually came to realize painting gave a sense of freedom she never felt during her professional life. Her children are now grown and have their own lives and responsibilities, so she is able to give full focus to enjoying and creating art. The Art of Mary Kay Holladay will be on view from Jan. 25 through March 12 during the Sandler Center’s normal operating hours: Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or during any performance at the Sandler Center. The Art Gallery is on the second and third floors in the common areas of the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts
