Register Now for the 2013 Winter Wildlife Festival

Witness winter wildlife January 25-27, 2013 | Princess Anne Recreation Center, 1400 Nimmo Parkway, Virginia Beach, VA

Registration Begins Thursday, November 15!

Free Exhibit Hall, Walk-Up Workshops & Children’s Activities on Saturday, January 26, 10 am - 4 pm

(Virginia Beach, VA) – This is your chance to witness winter wildlife all around Virginia Beach; whether it’s following fascinating bird activity, exploring the natural areas of our community or the musings of harbor seals near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Presented by Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation in partnership with Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the2013 Winter Wildlife Festival will teach you what it takes to properly observe and identify wildlife in their natural settings.

Registration runs from November 15 through January 18. Space is limited for the excursions and workshops, so register early to secure your spot! There is no cost to attend the festival, but some sessions and excursions do have a fee. You can register in person at any recreation center or by using the mail in registration form. Free and open to the public (with a fee required for only some sessions), this event includes educational workshops and engaging excursions that are sure to captivate outdoor enthusiasts, both novice and expert. Registration is required to attend workshops and excursions, so sign up for sessions such as:

  • Beginning Birding
  • Back Bay/False Cape Terra-Gator & Tram Tour
  • Owl Prowl
  • Mackay Island Excursion
  • Urban Birding Tour

And new this year:

  • Pleasure House Point Bird Walk
  • Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel & Fisherman’s Island
  • Back Bay & False Cape Birding
  • Intermediate Nature Photography & Photography Workshop

Join us for the Festival Kick-off on Friday, January 25 featuring keynote speaker Julie S. Zickefoose, writer and illustrator for Bird Watcher’s Digest, former National Public Radio Commentator and author of The Bluebird Effect: Uncommon Bonds with Common Birds, which was recently selected as media powerhouse Oprah Winfrey’s Book of the Week.

Also, be sure to stop by the Exhibit Hall on Saturday, January 26 and speak with Winter Wildlife Festival partners, including the Virginia Aquarium, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, False Cape State Park, First Landing State Park, Lynnhaven River NOW, and the Virginia Beach Audubon Society. Learn ways to get involved with local efforts, and find out what the environmental groups and businesses are up to. Observe skilled decoy carvers from the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum working on their craft. The Exhibit Hall and Walk-Up Workshops are free and open to the public, starting at 10 am until 4 pm on Saturday, January 26 at Princess Anne Recreation Center. Also taking place from 10am – 4pm are special children’s activities exclusively available at the neighboring Princess Anne Library (1444 Nimmo Parkway).
