City of Virginia Beach to Host Free Financial Planning Day

Kelvin Boston Will Provide Keynote Address and Dozens of Hampton Roads-area Financial Planners Will Offer Free Advice on Budgeting, Retirement Planning, Income Taxes, Investment Strategies, and More

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 · 12:45 pm

Are you finding it increasing difficult to go from pay day to pay day and still save for the future?  The City of Virginia Beach and the Financial Planning Association of Hampton Roads invites area residents to attend Virginia Beach Financial Planning Day on Oct. 27, 2012 and get free financial planning advice and guidance from professional financial planners. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 27, 2012 in Suite 5 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th St., and will feature experts from the Financial Planning Association® and highly qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals, all volunteering their time and expertise to work with local residents one-on-one to address important financial issues.

Kelvin Boston, executive producer and host of the “Moneywise with Kelvin Boston” public television series, will provide the keynote address at 10 a.m. Referred to as an “out-spoken voice for economic empowerment” by The New York Times, Boston is a respected financial journalist, public speaker and best-selling author of “Smart Money Moves for African Americans” (Putnam 1995).  More recent work includes “Who’s Afraid To Be A Millionaire?” and “The Confident Millionaire” audio book (Nightingale Conant 2006).

Financial planners will meet one-on-one with attendees to answer questions on getting out of debt, retirement planning, investment strategies, income taxes, insurance, mortgages and foreclosures, among many other topics.  The advice will be offered on a “no strings attached” basis and planners will not give out business cards or sell financial products or services.

The event will also feature a community resource fair and a series of classroom-style educational workshops addressing key personal finance topics including: Managing Money in Hard Times; Financially Surviving a Job Loss; Taking Control: A Financial Planning Starter Kit; and Estate Planning: What Everyone Needs to Know.
To participate in Virginia Beach Financial Planning Day and get the most from your free consultation:
  1. Register at http://www.financialplanningdays.org/Content/Home.aspx or call 877-861-7826. Walk-ins are also welcome, but advanced registrants will receive priority.
  2. Make a list of questions you want answered. Learn more about financial planning topics and the questions you can address with financial planners at www.FinancialPlanningDays.org/topics.
  3. Bring relevant financial documents and a financial snapshot of your current financial situation. For a list of useful tools to help you prepare, visit www.FinancialPlanningDays.org/resources.

Parking is available on-site at the Convention Center, but access to 19th Street will be closed from 6 to 9 a.m.  Cars approaching from the east or west prior to 9 a.m. can enter the parking lot from 17th Street/Virginia Beach Boulevard.  The building will be open to the public at 8:45 a.m.

Virginia Beach Financial Planning Day is organized by the City of Virginia Beach in partnership with FPA of Hampton Roads as part of a national Financial Planning Days initiative created by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Financial Planning Association, Foundation for Financial Planning and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.  The collaboration is a first-of-its kind effort involving city governments and thousands of financial planners nationwide united in an effort to provide free financial education and programming to communities throughout the United States.  Members of the news media are invited to attend the event and interview the organizers.

In October 2010, Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr. joined the National League of Cities Mayors’ Action Challenge for Children and Families and set specific, measurable, locally defined goals and targets for child and family well-being in the following areas: Opportunities to Learn and Grow; A Safe Neighborhood to Call Home; A Healthy Lifestyle & Environment; and A Financially Fit Family in which to Thrive. The Virginia Beach Human Services Department (HSD) is the lead agency on strategies to improve the financial capability of families.  Through partnership with the Hampton Roads Financial Planning Association and numerous other community resources, the department connects citizens to resources and education designed to help them become financially secure.

More than 100 people participated in the first Virginia Beach Financial Day in October 2011. In January 2012, HSD launched the 500 Families Financially Fit for the Future program and the Bank On Virginia Beach program.  For more information about these programs visit www.VBgov.com/hs and click on the Financial Empowerment link or call 757-385-3551.
