Harvey L. Bryant, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Virginia Beach, announced today that Dean Vincent Rainey, 45 years old, of the 5600 block of Aurora Drive in Virginia Beach, Virginia, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Glenn R. Croshaw to 129 years in prison on the following charges: two (2) counts each of Rape (Victim Under Age 13), Forcible Sodomy (Victim Under Age 13), and Inanimate Object Sexual Penetration (Victim Under Age 13); and three (3) counts of Custodial Indecent Liberties.
Upon pronouncing his sentence, Judge Croshaw remarked that the “amount of harm that has been caused to several families and individuals is insurmountable,” and “with the Court’s sentence, no child will be hurt again.” Judge Croshaw declined to suspend any of the prison term.
Dean Vincent Rainey pled guilty to the charges on May 8, 2012. Had this matter gone to trial, the Commonwealth’s evidence would have proven that between June 4, 2005 and April 17, 2008, Rainey repeatedly sexually assaulted a young child known to him. Again during the time period of April 18, 2010 and June 26, 2011, he continued to perform sex acts on the same child. The child disclosed the abuse, and detectives from the Virginia Beach Police Department began investigating the crimes. During a phone sting set up by police, Rainey apologized to the child and begged her to come and visit him.
Further investigation revealed that between March 31, 1985 and August 1, 1987, Rainey had sexually assaulted two other children, also known to him. He was approximately 20 years old at this time. He told the children not to report the abuse because no one would believe them and they would get in trouble.
