Why is Energy Conservation Important?
The non-renewable energy resources on Earth are finite. Therefore, it is imperative that we conserve our existing supply and use alternative sources wherever possible, so that our natural resources will be available for the generations to come.
Energy Conservation is also important because the use of non-renewable resources impacts the environment. Specifically, the use of fossil fuels contributes to impaired air and water quality. Other environmental impacts include rising sea level and global warming, which could significantly alter our climate, as well as lead to major changes in vegetation growth patterns that could cause some species to become extinct. Reduction of non-renewable energy consumption not only alleviates the environmental impact, but provides significant paybacks in terms of reduced energy costs.
Energy Conservation Programs
Virginia Energy Sense
Virginia Energy Sense is the Commonwealth's state-wide consumer energy education and outreach program under the guidance of the State Corporation Commission (SCC). It was created by the General Assembly to help Virginians understand how to save energy in support of the state's goal to reduce energy consumption ten percent. In addition, consumers can turn to the Virginia Energy Sense website or follow them on Twitter or Facebook to earn rewards from retailers about energy efficiency and renewable energy, find easy energy-saving tips that "make sense", and explore financial incentives that "save cents".
