Light Rail & Transportation in the Resort Area

Page Content

Background

Transportation to, from and within the Resort Area has primarily been automotive. This causes congestion along major corridors.

Right Now

The City and its regional transportation partner,

Hampton Roads Transit
operate a shuttle service along Atlantic Avenue. It connects shopping areas and amenities outside the Resort Area.

The City built bike paths along the Oceanfront Boardwalk, Ocean Walk, and General Booth Boulevard; however, auto travel is still the primary transportation mode.

The City is in the process of considering the purchase of the Newtown Rd. to Birdneck Road Norfolk Southern railroad right-of-way. Together, Virginia Beach and HRT contracted with HDR, Inc. to perform a Norfolk Tide light rail system feasibility analysis. The result of this study will help City leadership determine whether to proceed with light rail design and construction to the Resort Area.

Future Plan

In the future, light rail and the bus rapid transit system may extend from Norfolk to Town Center and the Oceanfront Resort Area.  Possible transit stops under consideration are the Convention Center and new Dome Site entertainment megaplex.
