The City of Virginia Beach is presenting its draft Department of Public Works Design Standards Manual for review and comment.
The current version of the Department of Public Works Specifications and Standards was first adopted by the City Council in 1994. When established, the document was a compilation of all of the current development related standards, policies, procedures, specifications, and details. The document also contained a mix of both private (on-site) infrastructure requirements and requirements and standards for public infrastructure. Since 1994 the document has been updated 9 times in its current format.
The document has been updated and restructured by a committee of City and private stakeholders to provide the private design community with a focused document providing design standards for Public Works owned and maintained infrastructure only. The name of the document will be changed to the Department of Public Works Design Standards Manual.
The updated document will provide the design community with a clear set of design standards for Public Works owned and maintained infrastructure. Other private (on-site) design requirements will be separated and available on the appropriate department’s web site for clarity.
The public review and comment period will remain open through April 30, 2012. Upon completion of the public review all comments will be considered by the standards committee and appropriate comments/revisions will be incorporated into the final updated document. The final Department of Public Works Design Standards Manual is forecasted to be presented to the City Council for approval in the Spring of 2012.
