When is a fire permit required?
A permit is required for the installation or alteration of any fire suppression or fire alarm system.
- Fire alarm systems (automatic and / or manual)
- Fire hydrants and Fire Department connections on private property
- Fire sprinkler systems
- Fire suppression systems
- Smoke control systems
- Standpipe systems
- Underground fire mains
What is required for a fire permit?
Fire Permit Requirements:
- Fire Permit Application completed with the following information:
- If a licensed contractor: Class A, B or C State Contractor's Registration number including contracting specialties, company name, contract value, registered Master Tradesman's signature, name of the customer/homeowner/tenant, physical address of the property where the work is being performed, and if there is another associated permit at the same address, that permit number
- If an owner: name, address, approximate cost of materials (enter this in the contract value), signature, and if there is another associated permit at the same address, that permit number
- For new, existing, addition, or moved fire work
Indicate the type of system to be installed and if applicable the make and model number as well as if applicable, the type of backflow preventer
How much does a fire permit cost?
Fire Costs: (Fire Suppression, Sprinkler, Fire Main, Standpipe & Fire Alarm Systems)
- A 2.0% levy is assessed on the total permit fees (rounded up)
- $30.00 plus $5.00 per $1,000.00 value or fraction thereafter, without limit, rounded up (i.e. $1,500: 2,000 ÷1,000 = 2; 2 x $5 = $10 + $30 = $40.00 + 2.0% ($.80) = $40.80)
When are fire inspections required?
Fire Inspections:
- Fire Alarm Systems:
- Test all notification and initiating devices (installed in accordance with USBC and NFPA 72)
- Communicator function - Check DBA levels
- Duct smoke detectors, suppression systems - must be connected to fire alarm system
Fire Sprinkler Systems:(installed in accordance with USBC, NFPA 13, 13R,
- New:
- Rough in (before pipe is covered)
- Hydrostatic test @200psi for 2 hours
- 24 hour air test @40psi (dry system)
- Trip test (dry system)
- Fire pump, tested per NFPA 20
- Final
- Existing:
- Rough in (before pipe is covered)
- Hydrostatic test @50psi over city pressure
- Final
Access Control
Fire Suppression Systems:
- Clean Agent (FM200) Systems: (installed in accordance with USBC and NFPA 2001)
- Concentration analysis(door fan test)
- Warning signs, interior and exterior
- Test all notification and initiating devices
- Trip test: 30 second delay (automatic actuation); no delay (manual actuation); HVAC shut down; dampers closed (where applicable); building fire alarm activated (where applicable)
- Kitchen hood systems: installed in accordance with USBC and NFPA 17A)
- Final trip test: discharge test (observation of expellant gas); exhaust fan on; make-up air off; all electrical and gas off; building fire alarm activated (where applicable)
- Underground Fire Mains:
- Rough in (before pipe is covered)(installed in accordance with NFPA 24)
- Hydrostatic test: Siamese tied into fire main, 200psi for 2 hours; fire main (no Siamese),100psi for 1 hour
- Full flow flush underground control valve open fully
- Final: color coding for private fire hydrants; 4 ½ connection facing the curb line
How are fire inspections scheduled?
Fire inspections require that the inspector meet with contractors on-site. These inspections can only be scheduled by speaking directly with the Fire inspector between 8:00 am and 9:00 am It is recommended to contact the Fire inspector at least 48 hours before the day the inspection is desired, and call to confirm the appointment between 8:00 am and 9:00 am the day of the inspection.
