The Board assists the Planning Director in determining when to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness, which is required before a building permit can be issued. The Historical Review Board evaluates the development proposal as to its architectural compatibility in terms of design and materials of the proposed structures. These evaluations fall into three major categories:
- Applications approved routinely with no comments. These are usually minor changes to existing structures.
- Applications approved with informal suggestions as to design criteria and construction materials and landscaping.
- Applications approved subject to conditions relating to design criteria and landscaping.
Meetings of the Historical Review Board are held on the third Thursday of each month at 2:30 pm. The formal session is preceded by an informal review session beginning at 2:00 pm. Meeting locations vary each month; please contact the Planning Department at (757) 385-4621 to find out where the meeting will be held.
