Transportation Planning is the city’s comprehensive home for coordinating short and long-range multi-modal transportation issues. The division works with other City Departments to plan, design, fund, and implement transportation projects. The intermodal approach to transportation in Virginia Beach includes pedestrians, bicycles, cars and trucks, and public transit.
The department is the primary contact for work with
Hampton Roads Transit, the city’s transit and handi-ride provider. The division is also leading the City’s interdepartmental team as they continue to study the potential extension of Light Rail or Bus Rapid Transit to the beach, a joint effort with HRT. The division also works with other agencies including our peers in other Hampton Roads communities, the Hampton Roads TPO,
VDOT,
and the
Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation.
The department also provides transportation and land use planning coordination with our partners at the SGA office linking transportation with future development in these eight urban centers of our City.
